The first thing you notice in his studio are plastic crates with vinyl records, neatly in a row, as if it were an installation. Next you find rolls of tape hanging on the wall, also carefully sorted, like a composition. The third thing you notice is a square plate of aluminium, a ‘board’, covered with material reminiscent of traffic signs and geometry. Here is someone at work who likes order and control. “Sorry for the mess,” says Sjimmie Veenhuis, without moving a muscle. He means it, order is a central element in Veenhuis’s work. The ‘board’ turns out to be a part of a large sculpture. Veenhuis picks up his phone to show what the intention is: a large and shiny cube of 3 by 3 meters with lines that occur to be swirly. [1]
“It happens automatically, I just see it. There is that moment when everything falls together like a jigsaw and turns out to work. That’s wonderful.” [2]
“When I look at my surroundings, at random things or objects, I always wonder how anything could be something else. I think everything can be a different thing for someone else. Sometimes you notice it with a little twist. The smaller the better, I say as an artist. Maximum transformation through minimal adjustment.” [2]
“Everyone has a different view on reality and by that we shape this world all together.” [2]
