Arpeggio was part of the 2017 edition of the annual open house of De Biotoop in Haren [NL]. The starting point of the exhibition was to highlight the contemporary relevance of a selection of artists who all reside in the same building, through similar ingredients found in their work. [1]
‘The building was once home to the University of Groningen’s biological centre, and lectures and experiments were conducted there. Today, more than 300 people live and work in the seven wings that comprise the complex, roughly 30,000 (!) square metres of space in total. Three wings house the workshops, ateliers and studios where artists and other creatives can practice their disciplines and crafts in peace.’ [2]
In addition to the characteristics within the selected artworks, the title Arpeggio refers mainly to the structure of the presentation in two stairways of the building. The coherence of the presentation reveals itself note by note instead of in one beat, just as the notes of arpeggio chords are played on an instrument. Through this setup, the exhibition naturally connects the individual works of the participating artists.
